New Decade's Resolution: Principle of Charity
2020 is the end as well as the start of a decade. The last 10 years of my life I have lived and grown, and I will continue to do so. However, this next decade will be the decade where my life actually starts. This next decade I will graduate college, I will be able to legally drink, I will start my professional job, and so much more. Experiencing what the next 10 years have in store for me excites me as well as scares me. So, instead of reflecting on the past 10 years, I want to speak my hopes for the next 10 years into existence – like a New Decade’s Resolution.
My New Decade’s Resolution is to treat myself charitably. When thinking about what I care about, shockingly enough, myself was not something I thought. I believe if I asked this question to other people they would also not say themselves in the list of things they care about. I have a feeling some part of this is due to the effort to not appear narcissistic or selfish, both things with stigmas surrounding them. However, as Professor Robb implored us to read charitably during Sapere Aude, I am now applying this same principle to myself for the new decade. I do not know what this action necessarily entails but I want to be happy and love myself in the future, which means I have to care about myself and treat myself with kindness and love. Therefore, I will be reading charitably as well as treating myself charitably as I enter the next semester of Humes.
